A Little Bit About Me

Hello there! My name is Jared McMullen, and I am excited to join the team at Blackhawk Christian School as the Chemistry I and ICP teacher! This year will be my 3rd year teaching high school and my 6th year teaching overall, as I previously taught for three years in the field of Veterinary Technology. I am what some people would call a non‑traditional teacher, meaning I had previous careers before entering the education field. I started in military intelligence with the United States Navy right out of high school in 2007 and was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2009. After my time in the Navy, I went into veterinary medicine and worked as a Veterinary Technician for many years before rediscovering my passion for teaching. That realization opened the door for me to teach at Globe University – Green Bay and at the Vet Tech Institute here in Fort Wayne. When the latter closed, I had a brief stint in sales and marketing, including a role as the Communications Director at The Chapel here in Fort Wayne. Being around other brothers and sisters in Christ encouraged me to take the leap into the Transition to Teaching program at PFW, where I successfully completed the program and earned an M.S.Ed. in Secondary Education. After my role at The Chapel, I spent the last 2 1/2 years teaching at Northrop High School.

My wife and I grew up in Huntington and are high school sweethearts. We have been together for over 20 years and married for 17. We have been blessed with 3 wonderful children who keep us busy and on our toes at all times. We also have 3 fur babies—2 rambunctious beagles named Elrond and Elros and 1 sweet kitty named Ellanore. As far as hobbies and interests go, the first thing you should know about me is that I am a self‑proclaimed hybrid nerd. I can be carrying on a conversation about football or basketball one minute and transition to talking about trading cards or board games the next without skipping a beat. My family loves watching sports together, especially football and basketball. We also enjoy any activity outside together, especially hiking. I am an avid gamer and enjoy all sorts of board games as well as competitive trading card games like Magic: The Gathering. I am eager to combine my love of science with my biblical worldview to help the students at BCS be prepared for the first day after high school.
